WD Black 4TB Performance Hard Drive Review

western Digital is a big name in the hard drive space. Though there are inevitably some duds here and there with WD hard drives, the Black series has been the favorite for many over the years, with their boosted performance and reliability. For this particular review, we’ll be taking a close look at the WD Black, specifically the 3.5-inch 4TB hard drive with 256MB cache. There are many other formats, sizes, and variations out there in the Black series, but all these SATA-based drives will deliver roughly the same results thanks to their shared interface. Since hard drives are typically tucked away inside a computer for the extent of their lifetime, it’s no surprise that the overall design is utilitarian. Encased in a tough metal box, the WD Black features a sticker with some branding on the top, and the SATA 3 interface/plug at the bottom. These particular internal hard disk drives come in both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch variations, so your specific needs will determine which is best for yo...

How to Boot From a USB Device

There are lots of reasons you might want to boot from a USB device, like an external hard drive or a flash drive, but it's usually so you can run special kinds of software. When you boot from a USB device, what you're actually doing is running your computer with the operating system that's installed on the USB device. When you start your computer normally, you're running it with the operating system installed on your internal hard drive — Windows, Linux, etc. Time Required: Booting from a USB device usually takes 10–20 minutes but it depends a lot on if you have to make changes to how your computer starts up. How to Boot From a USB Device Follow these easy steps to boot from a flash drive, an external hard drive, or some other bootable USB device: Change the BIOS boot order so the USB device option is listed first. The BIOS is rarely set up this way by default. Removable Devices listed first in the boot order of PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility If the USB boot option is not fi...

Seagate Backup Plus Hub 6TB Review

Seagate is a well-known name in the world of external hard drives, and the Seagate Backup Plus Hub is one of the brand’s desktop HDDs. With large capacities of between 4TB and 10TB, cross-platform compatibility, and dual functionality as both a data hub and a recharging station, the Seagate Backup Plus Hub should be a valuable addition to any home office. I tested the 6TB version of the Backup Plus Hub for a week to see if its design, performance, and features make it a worthwhile investment. Seagate Backup Plus Hub The Seagate Backup Plus Hub is larger than a typical portable hard drive, but it’s not huge by any means. It sits 4.6 inches tall, 1.6 inches wide, 7.8 inches in depth, and its all-black color scheme makes it fit in well with other office equipment. It looks sleek on a desk sitting beside a laptop or desktop monitor, and it doesn’t have any unattractive features that make it stick out like a sore thumb. The sides are glossy and there’s a honeycomb pattern on the top and bot...

What Is a Hard Drive Activity Light?

A hard drive activity light sometimes referred to as an HDD LED, a hard drive light, or a hard drive activity indicator, is a small LED light that illuminates whenever the hard drive or other built-in storage is being read from or written to. Knowing when your computer's hard drive is being accessed is helpful so you can avoid pulling the battery or unplugging the computer while the operating system is still accessing files on the drive, a mistake that can cause corruption of important files. Where Is the HDD LED Located? On a desktop, the hard drive activity light is usually positioned on the front of the computer case. On a laptop, the HDD LED is usually located near the power button, which is sometimes next to the keyboard and other times on an edge of the computer. On tablet and other small form factor computers, the hard drive light is on some edge of the device, usually the bottom. External hard drives, flash drives, network-attached storage, and other outside-the-computer st...

U32 Shadow 1TB USB-C External Hard Drive

xternal hard drives are useful tools for photo, movie, and file storage, but they’re also an excellent way to get extra storage for gaming consoles like Xbox One or PS4. The U32 Shadow USB-C HDD is supposed to be designed for just that purpose—saving your Xbox and PlayStation console titles so you can bring your drive to a friend’s house and play your games on-the-go, while also reserving storage space on your actual console. I tested the 1TB U32 Shadow for a week to see how it performs as both a gaming and general-purpose hard drive. The U32 Shadow is small with a thin profile, clocking in at only 4.9 inches tall, 2.9 inches wide, and less than a half-inch in thickness. The drive is portable, which allows you to take it with you to a buddy’s house for a gaming session, or toss it in your laptop bag when you’re working on-the-go. The USB-C cable plugs into the top of the U32, and it powers the device, so there’s no extra power cable. It’s matte-black finish blends in with other equipme...
